If you have been to New York or are a New Yorker, you must have seen tons of food carts sprawling around the city. Out of them, I think ‘The Halal Guys’ food carts serving gyro and chicken, are one of the best when it comes to street food.
But don’t be fooled as you will find similar food carts all around the city. ‘The Halal Guys’ are distinguished by their yellow t-shirts and the words – ‘We are Different’ written on it. Many people have even dubbed them as the “best chicken and rice stand in NYC.”
Their menu is simple – either get a steaming hot platter of chicken/ lamb over rice or get chicken/gyro in a pita bread. However, their ‘combo platter’ remains an all time favorite with most. Let me tell you one more thing – their sauces make the dish even more flavorsome.
Their hot sauce is by far the spiciest thing I have ever had! I mean, me being from India, you can safely assume that I can handle spicy food. But NO! The first time, my over-confidence made me say – “Dude… How spicy can it be? Bring it on!” What happened right after that is something only I know. My tongue was flaming, and I could almost feel smoke coming out of my nose and ears. ? Poor hubby had to run to Starbucks and get me a Frappuccino.
So my tip for you is – go all out with their white sauce but try their hot sauce in very small quantities… unless you can handle it for real. You don’t wanna make the mistake that I did.
People diligently stand in line (even on cold wintery nights) to get a dose of the halal guys – me being one of them ? The service is quick and you will most definitely love this place for their awesome food and their even awesome prices (between $5- $7!)
If you are wandering late night around the city and are craving for something hot, this is one of the must-try options to consider.
Apart from their original location on 53rd street in New york city (which is open till 4am, btw), they have even expanded their network to multiple locations in the city as well as states like California, Texas etc. and a few other countries as well! If you ever get a chance to try them out, go ahead. I guarantee you will thank me later.
XOXO

April 3, 2016Looks tasty! I’ll have to ask some of my NYC friends and relatives if they have tried the Halal Guys. Your story reminded me of a long time ago when I was in the city visiting my sister and got a gyro from a street vendor. I was only in for the day and the gyro was so spicy I had to borrow my sister’s toothbrush to put out the fire! Desperate situations call for desperate measures!
Smiling Notes
April 3, 2016Haha omg I can totally imagine the situation you were in and you trying to put out the heat in your mouth! ? Truly desperate times lol

April 11, 2016Shamira.. You made me drool.. I loved their chicken over rice.. and yeah.. Even I believe the red sauce was a hell lot spicy.. I never in my life had something as spicy as this one.. But I loved their white sauce.. The pitas also are very soft and a little different.. my husband used to have falafel sandwich as he is a veggie ?
Smiling Notes
April 11, 2016Thanks a lot Monika.. hahaa and I’m staying far away from the hot sauce going forward 😀 So happy to know even you love them 🙂
