In a world where we are constantly on social media & surrounded by things where everyone tries to put their best foot forward, we often subconsciously compare ourselves with others and then end up feeling bad because our lives may not seem perfect to us.

I feel that as humans we are our own worst critics. How many times have we stood in front of the mirror and criticized ourselves by saying things like – “Oh, I look so fat” or “my pores are so big”, “my hair looks so bad”, “I wish I were as successful as my friend” and countless other things?

To be honest, I am guilty of saying things like this to myself that I dare not ever say to others.

And I’m sure I’m not the only one who does that. In fact, it’s not just women who are so critical towards themselves. Even men can feel the same way. Both my husband and I have constantly struggled with these issues which can sometimes be really demotivating.

Lately, I have been doing a lot of thinking and pondering over the fact as to why am I so hard on myself sometimes?

With the onset of the new year, I aim to stop being so critical of myself and be thankful and happy for the way I am and say ‘Yes’ to Positivity.

So what exactly is Self-Love?

You may have seen the term ‘self-love’ thrown around a lot. But what exactly is it? Self-love is a journey and takes dedication, practice, and perseverance. It’s almost like gratitude and feeling blessed for all the things that you have and appreciating yourself for being you.

It’s not something that you do one day and then forget about it the next day. It requires a conscious effort on your part towards loving and appreciating yourself and realizing that you are capable of more things in life.

So instead of comparing myself with others, I plan to focus on what I have achieved so far. I’m making sure that when I look at myself in the mirror, I do not focus on any negativity. We need to stop being so harsh on ourselves and learn to love our bodies and how we look just the way we are.

Setting aside time for yourself to do some meditation or just to reflect on the things that you have achieved during the day also helps a lot.

Another way I’m planning to practice self-love, or rather this is something I have already started doing, is by writing down all the things that I have accomplished during the day.

So instead of feeling lost and unmotivated by focusing on pending tasks, writing down things that you have accomplished during the day or week is a great exercise to focus on the positive aspects of life.

One more thing that I am planning to achieve this is by surrounding myself with positive things. We all know that we attract what we think so surround yourself with positive people who uplift you. Because honestly, I do not have time for negativity.

Self-love doesn’t just focus on what’s on the outside, but also what’s on the inside. Sure, you can go ahead and get a much-deserving and relaxing spa or a nice mani-pedi session or listen to some of your favorite songs and kick back with a nice book.

But don’t just stop here. It could also mean doing simple things like meditation or eating a good meal.

Just the way I am making a consistent effort towards loving and appreciating myself, I’m also focusing on staying positive by eating right.

Writing down your accomplishments is such a big deal. I’ve started doing that myself and it helps put everything into perspective.
