With all the chemicals in different products around us, it can sometimes get really difficult to live a more natural and chemical-free lifestyle. But by taking just a little bit of effort and being aware of the things that you choose to use in your home, you can easily strive towards a healthier lifestyle. Here are 10 Simple Tips to have a Chemical-Free House #freeofsulfates

Of course, it’s not possible to completely eliminate all chemicals that we are surrounded with. But by taking small steps, we can certainly live a more healthy and natural lifestyle.

So here are a few simple ways in which you can detoxify your home and have a chemical-free home.

1. Fresh food over canned products

One way I like to make sure that we live a more healthy lifestyle is by rarely using canned foods while cooking.

Sure, grabbing a can of soup, beans or broth is really convenient, especially when you’re pinched for time. But try not to make it a habit every time you cook. If you think about it, it’s really easy to make your own chicken or vegetable broth or soak beans beforehand and cook them when required.

I like to make my broths in bigger batches on weekends and then freeze them. For a more convenient way, freeze it into portions so that you can just grab what you need and you don’t have to thaw an entire container of broth.

2. Shoe free home

I cannot stress the importance of this enough. Just think about where your shoes travel – trains, buses, public toilets… ugh! You don’t want all of that dirt, germs, and other pollutants inside your home, do you?

We’ve always had a shoe-free home and it really does help to keep the house cleaner and healthier. You can always have separate indoor shoes if you’d like – that way your house stays much cleaner.

Don’t worry about what to tell guests that come over to your home. Most people I know also follow the same rule and even if they don’t, they respect the fact that you have a shoe-free home.

3. Bring the Greenery In

house plants help to liven up a space

Plants help liven up any space. Houseplants not only help to bring the outdoors in and visually elevate any space but they also help to purify the air. We have several plants all around the home and no, I don’t really have a green thumb.

I know many of us don’t keep plants because we end up forgetting to water them and not taking proper care of them.

The key is to get low-maintenance indoor plants that require occasional watering.

Pothos, Bromeliads, Peace Lily, Snake Plant, and Succulents are some of the low-maintenance plants that are very forgiving and won’t die even if you forget to water them for a couple of days.

4. Use Natural Air Fresheners

There are so many varieties of air fresheners that claim to make your home smell like a tropical rainforest or a breezy beach, that it’s really easy to get tempted.

But hey, why breathe all those toxins and artificial scents when you can easily make something of your own minus all the chemicals?

One of my favorite ways to naturally make my home smell amazing is by simmering a pot of water with a few sticks of cinnamon, a handful of cloves, and a few slices of oranges or lemons.

5. Use Sulfate-Free Products

I have been using sulfate-free products for a long time now. I like the fact that they are less harsh and are said to be better for your lifestyle. After all, a healthy lifestyle is the key to a happy family! Getting started with using sulfate-free products is really easy.

You just have to be a little vigilant when buying products and check whether the brand states the sulfate-free disclosure on their product.

It is very important for me to know what type of products I use when it comes to cleaning our clothes. After all, we practically live in our clothes.

Just the way choosing a laundry detergent is important, it is also very important for me to know and understand what I’m putting on my body. Especially when it comes to my hair, I like to stay away from harsh chemicals.

That’s why I choose sulfate-free hair care products like AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner. They have clinically proven mild formulas for sensitive skin and scalp. They are not just sulfate-free but are also dye-free and paraben-free.

AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner contains naturally derived cleansers and a sulfate-free formula to gently cleanse your hair and scalp.

I know that I’m doing my best to achieve my goals of living a healthy lifestyle by choosing AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner.

That’s also why when it comes to choosing a laundry detergent, I choose to buy all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS®. It is not only sulfate-free but it also includes the ingredients on the back of the bottle so you know exactly what is going onto your family’s laundry.

It delivers a powerful clean without harshness.

The sulfate-free formula infuses your fabrics with essential, proven, and effective ingredients for deep cleaning that help to remove even the toughest of stains. This means that I can safely rely on it without having to worry about anything.

6. Use Filtered Water

Sure bottled water is pretty inexpensive as well as convenient, but filtered water is practically free. Plus, reducing the amount of plastic is good for the environment and you also get the satisfaction that you’re doing something better for the earth.

7. Essential Oil Aroma Diffusers

If you’re into essential oils, then getting an aroma diffuser is something that you should definitely consider. Aroma diffusers aren’t that costly, to begin with, and can be quite relaxing and calming.

Just add a few drops of your favorite essential oil in it and let the diffuser do its work. You will have a pleasant scent in your room without having to worry about inhaling any harsh chemicals.

8. DIY Multi-Purpose Cleaning Solution

You know those cleaning solutions you have lying around your house right now? Swap them for something natural.

I love making simple and natural cleaners to clean my kitchen countertops, kitchen cabinets, refrigerator, windows, etc.

Here’s how I make my Multi-purpose cleaning solution –

  • 2 cups water

  • 2-4 drops of dishwashing liquid

Put water and dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle. Give it a good shake and your multi-purpose cleaning solution is ready.

If you have any tough stains or grease to remove from the stove or countertops, you can always use a store-bought cleaner. But for regular everyday use, I swear by this as it’s a great natural alternative.

9. Let your home Breathe

One thing I love about the warmer weather is that I can finally open the windows and let the natural airflow in. Whether you live in a city or suburb, you can get rid of unpleasant odors just by opening your windows and replacing them with the natural freshness of nature.

10. Natural Deodorizers

Baking Soda is a great natural deodorizer. I keep a small pack of baking soda in the fridge to get rid of that funky fridge smell.

sprinkle baking soda on carpet and then vacuum it up to get rid of odors

Similarly, carpets are notorious for clinging to odors. To neutralize and deodorize, sprinkle some baking soda on your carpets or upholstered furniture. Let it sit for some time and then vacuum it up. I also sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of our trash can. It’s a great way to keep odors away!

So there you go! Just a few simple steps and you can live a better and healthier lifestyle. Doesn’t it sound so easy?

What steps do you take to make your home chemical-free?

With all the chemicals in different products around us, it can sometimes get really difficult to live a more natural and chemical-free lifestyle. Thanks a lot, Erika. You know to be honest, I’ve always found wearing outside shoes inside the house to be a bit strange because of hygiene issues. But I’m seeing more people open to the concept of a shoe-free home these days.
