“You can’t just eat good food. You’ve got to talk about it too. And you’ve got to talk about it to somebody who understands that kind of food.”
― Kurt Vonnegut

This meal was part of a press dinner meet and as always, all opinions are mine.

About Amami Japanese Cocktail Bar

With a focus on attention to detail in every dish and sourcing free-range meats as well as high-quality seafood, Amami will leave you impressed.

Amami started in 2016 and the restaurant strives to serve unsurpassed Japanese food with a unique touch of Brooklyn, prepared through tried and tested methods as well as centuries-old techniques to give it an authentic touch.

Owner and head chef Nick Wang is a veteran of Hatsuhana and with more than 22 years of experience, guides his staff to make sure that each and every aspect of the dish is prepared with attention to detail.

Over the weekend I got a chance to visit this beautiful restaurant and do some tastings. Upon arrival, I was taken in with the rustic chic decor that gives a warm and inviting feel to this place.

The restaurant is pretty big which you might not realize when you first step in. Next year they are also planning to start a rooftop bar giving visitors an even greater excuse to hang out at this place.

The staff is really efficient and friendly and makes sure that you get your order on time. The restaurant got pretty busy around the peak lunch hour and I could see there were a few regulars that had come there as well.

As for the menu, you will be truly spoilt for choice as they have a lot of varieties. If you’re confused about what to get, just ask for the chef’s recommended dish and you won’t be disappointed. All the dishes are so beautifully presented, that even if you do not eat seafood, you will end up falling in love with it.

Here’s what we had –

Jasmine Tea ($4) & Iced Matcha ($4)

I always like to have a steaming cup of tea at a Japanese restaurant and the Jasmine Tea was perfect for the cool weather that day. While I opted for the Jasmine Tea, the hubby decided to try their Iced Matcha which I ended up loving as well.

Whole Live Scallops ($15)

We started our meal with some delicious whole live scallops from their specials menu. Sliced right out of their shells and served with a side of scallop that is chopped and mixed with ponzu, yuzu tobiko, and scallion, this dish was as fresh as fresh can get.

The presentation was on point – it’s just one of those dishes that you’d call ‘perfect Insta worthy images.’ The ice at the bottom not only added to the visual appeal but also kept the scallops cool and fresh and they literally melted in my mouth.

Yakitori (2 for $5) – Chicken Heart, Chicken Gizzard, Squid and Pork Belly

Skewered meat with delicious flavors cooked to perfection. My favorite was the pork belly amongst the four.

Miso Glazed Black Cod ($11)

Being marinated for 24 hours in aged low sodium organic miso sauce, the fish tasted succulent and fresh. I highly, highly recommend this dish. This was my husband’s favorite dish as well.

In the middle of the meal, I glanced at their cocktail menu. and was intrigued to try out their Bellini ($10) which has sparkling wine and peach puree. You can mix additional flavors in it as well like Strawberry, Guava, Blueberry, and Raspberry.

Free-Range Chicken Sandwich + Japanese Sausage ($16) – from their Weekend menu

Crispy and succulent, this dish will keep you full without giving you that bloated feeling. I loved the fact that the bread was lightly toasted giving the sandwich a great texture. Although the chicken was fried it didn’t feel oily at all. It’s a great alternative for people who do not eat beef or seafood.

Spicy Avocado Toast + Sweet Potato Fries ($16) – from their Weekend menu

Sprinkled with fresh mixed greens and a layer of avocado – this makes for a perfect brunch meal. Light yet fulfilling.

The Sweet Potato fries that were served with Matcha Mayo were unlike any other fries that I have tried to date. Don’t get me wrong, I have had my fair share of sweet potato fries and I’m used to those crisp and crunchy ones. But these were soft like a cloud, and I ended up absolutely loving them.

Also, their Matcha Mayo is my new obsession. I wish they could sell this everywhere.

Sushi – Amberjack, Japanese Sea Bream, King Salmon and Hamachi Toro (Fatty Yellowtail)

We tried four different types of Sushi and it definitely was one the freshest Sushi that we have tried. Out of the four that we tried, I loved the Japanese Seabream and the Amberjack more.

Matcha Tiramisu & Homemade Miso Ice Cream

We were full with our meal but when we were told that they have Matcha Tiramisu and homemade Miso ice cream, I couldn’t resist myself.

I’m a huge lover of Tiramisu – in fact, I can never say no to it. But I had never tried a Matcha flavored Tiramisu and wondered what it would taste like. Well, the answer is it tasted fabulous. The Matcha was not at all overpowering and there was a nice blend of the tiramisu flavor. An amazing fusion dessert, if I may say. Don’t miss this.

Final Verdict?

If you’re in or around Brooklyn and are looking for high-quality Japanese food, whether it’s Sushi, Ramen, or Sashimi, you should definitely give this place a visit. I am sure you’ll love it as much as we did.

** Special thanks to Henry Yang, the Manager Director, for being such a fabulous host.
