Fourth of July Long weekend Getaway

Hello Lovely People!

I was a bit busy this last week with all the packing and planning for our little weekend trip with two of our best friends who stay in Boston. They had invited us over for the long weekend and we were really excited to meet them after many months!! Our plan was simple – relax, do some barbecuing, as well as go for a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard – a small island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

We left on Thursday evening and reached their place at night. After a good night’s sleep, the next morning all we did was relax, have breakfast and caught up with each other. As we were chatting, our friend suggested that we all go to a close by winery after lunch. So we jumped off the couch, prepped for the evening barbecue and got dressed.

Nashoba’s Valley Winery located in a nice town called Bolton has a pretty huge area and a lovely staff.

The wine tasting was $8.50 per head for 5 wines of your choice and we were given complimentary wine glasses. After the wine tasting, we lounged around for a bit. The place was beautiful, surrounded by many visitors like us. They even have apple picking, but the season hadn’t started yet.

We stayed there for about an hour and a half and then headed home. After a short tennis and frisbee session, we were really pumped up for the evening barbecue! We had already marinated chicken breasts, drumsticks and veggies before leaving for the winery using my ‘Chicken Tikka’ recipe. Not to pat my own back, but it was the bomb! We were so full yet wanted more!!

It was a fun day with lovely friends – good food, good music and awesome wine!

As planned, the next day we hit the road to go to Martha’s Vineyard. On the way we had a quick pit stop at ’99 Restaurant and Pub’ which deserves another post.

You need to take the ferry to reach the island (quite obviously) and the ferry ride alone was quite fun! The weather was a bit overcast and quite cool; didn’t feel like summer at all! Thankfully, it didn’t rain!

Upon reaching there, we rented mopeds and roamed the island! Ohh it was sooo much fun!! We rode from points like Oak’s Bluff to Edgartown and Vineyard Haven to back. I indeed felt like a free bird!

As dusk approached, we could see people gearing up for the fireworks! We took the last ferry back from Oak’s Bluff which was at 8.30 pm. The best part about it was we could see multiple fireworks at different locations; albeit from a distance. The air was pretty chilly on our way back…so much so that many people preferred to stay inside. But few like me, wanted to stay on the deck, get some more fresh air and enjoy nature!IMG_2705

Since we moved to the UK, “barbecue” means anything cooked outside, and bbq sauce isn’t for sale in the stores. I’m a vegetarian but my partner’s a meat-eating Texan, and I’ve been working my way through homemade bbq sauce recipes so she can feed that old craving. The ones I’ve made have been okay, but I don’t think I’ve found the absolutely-this-is-it recipe yet.

Wow! Homemade bbq sauce sounds super interesting!! I must say it’s really sweet of you to try and find that perfect recipe for your partner. She is really lucky! 🙂

It is wonderful. As a kid I would spend my summers in Falmouth, right near Woods Hole. I was a “mother’s helper” for our neighbor and would help with the kids, babysitting on the weekends and during the week when necessary. They had a cottage right on a lake and we would go swimming, water-skiing, sail boating, row boating daily…it was the most fun time!!! The Cape is very special to me, glad you had a chance to enjoy it!!! 🙂
